The Arts not only enrich a student’s personal growth, but they have been shown to link with intellectual development and physical co-ordination as well. That’s why at Bracken Ridge SHS the Arts are designed to create uplifting and beneficial experiences for everyone, and play a vital role in many of our schools activities. We strive to extend and challenge our students, as well as to open new opportunities for students to discover, develop and express the musical, dramatic, artistic talents, and technical production skills that many of us don’t realise we have. Every two years at Bracken Ridge SHS, The Arts Department produces a musical. The musical in 2017 was ‘Grease’.

The school musical is the result of continued nurturing by The Arts Department and the greater Bracken Ridge State High School community. Staff and students look forward to the musical every two years as a means of refining and celebrating their achievements and hard work. These achievements and contributions were not just from The Arts Department but provided an opportunity for students across the school to be a part of this wonderful cultural experience.

This year we were fortunate to have again the talents of a professional choreographer, Mrs Rosalind Vivian, join our Production Team to assist our talented school staff. The contributions of Mrs Vivian to our musical were invaluable, allowing for seamless transitioning between acting and dancing. The musical rehearsals progressed well throughout semester 1 with all students attending and working with both commitment and enthusiasm.

We were excited to showcase student progress during our preparations and Bracken Ridge State High School was fortunate enough to be invited to perform at in the lead-up to the musical. These events were the Backyard Bonanza (Sunday 28 May 2017) and Nashville State School’s Under 8’s Day (Friday 2 June 2017). Students involved valued these performances and enjoyed providing snippets of the musical to our community.

The musical is always a positive experience for those staff and students involved, creating stronger bonds between our already tight-knit school community. The Arts Department would also like to thank those parents and community businesses and groups who supported our production this year through the provision of services or goods, for which we were exceptionally grateful.
